Barb Chamberlain - Director of Active Transportation, Washington State DOT Seattle WA
Barb joined the Washington State Dept. of Transportation in March 2017 as the first Director of WSDOT's newly created Active Transportation Division. Prior to that she led Washington Bikes for four years before it merged with Cascade Bicycle Club in 2016, when she became chief strategic officer of both organizations. In 2014 the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals named her the Nonprofit Professional of the Year.
Barb served as an Idaho state legislator and on the elected board of North Idaho College. She spent 14-1/2 years at Washington State University Spokane, where she headed external relations and spent most of her “spare” time volunteering on biking and active transportation. She founded Spokane Bikes (formerly Bike to Work Spokane) in 2007 with the help of Washington Bikes, chaired the Spokane Bicycle Advisory Board, and served on the Spokane Regional Transportation Council board. In 2014 the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals named her the Nonprofit Professional of the Year.
She and her bike-racing husband Eric Abbott have four children from high school to beyond college age and go for long rides in search of good coffee.
