Fionnuala Quinn - Founder The Bureau of Good Roads, Oak Hill VA

Fionnuala has played advocacy roles in the street design and safety conversation at the local, state, and national level. In addition to her long career as a licensed civil engineer, she has run an award-winning children’s STEM program for seven years.

Fionnuala has written nationally-recognized community design guides and run companion workshops for community groups and local officials.

Her combined roles have given her unique insight into activities that explain design and how we can use our streets in new ways.



The Bureau of Good Roads offers a fresh and lively approach to the interface between the design and community conversation about our streets through the following:

  • STEM classes and programs for children ages 7 to 13

  • Downloadable STEM activities for schools and youth groups

  • Design education workshops for community members and officials

  • Review of proposed designs of street, transit and community facilities

  • Design advisory roles on walking and bicycling related topics

  • Educational walking and bicycling field tours for community members and officials

  • Festival demonstrations and hands-on activities

  • Other customized trainings and events
